You can have a bachelor’s degree or a master’s in psychology, sociology, child development, science, math, physical education, kinesiology, but it is up to you.
Teaching is such a great field as a mother or a father because you get holidays, weekends, and breaks off in between your days of teaching. You can be there more for your little ones or enjoy vacations and time off.
Schools districts tend to give great benefits to their teachers and retirement too. Here are the questions you must have about what to study to become a teacher and programs to help you get your teaching credential/degree.
Questions About How to Become a Teacher
How can I become a teacher?
If you want to become a teacher, you will need a teaching credential. You can choose between two types of credentials which are: single subject credential or multiple subject credential.
A single subject credential will allow you to teach one specific subject to students such as math or science, etc.
A multiple subject credential gives you the option to teach multiple subjects to students.
You must also have at least a bachelor’s degree. Although, a master’s degree can allow for more pay and options for teachers.
You can also specialize in special education to become a special education teacher with a teaching credential.
How long does it take to become a teacher?
It can depend on how long you finish your general education courses (which is one and a half to three years as a full-time student).
After that, you must receive a bachelor’s degree, which can take another one to two years if you go full-time.
After your bachelor’s degree, you can enroll in single or multiple subject credential programs. Some universities will have combined programs for bachelor’s and master’s degree programs.
You need to look if the credential courses are within the bachelor’s or master’s degree of your choice.
What will I learn in single or multiple subject credential programs?
Once you have taken courses for your bachelor’s or master’s that will make you a great teacher, the credential program will help you learn how to teach students of different age groups.
At the end of your program, you will need to complete an internship working as a teacher and receive a certain amount of hours. The length might vary along with the number of hours for each state you go to school. However, typically your program wants you to have hands-on training in the classroom. This is so that you know how to apply your knowledge and skillset as a teacher.
Once you have completed the program, you can apply for your credential once you take the PRAXIS exam or an exam given by your state to become a certified teacher. I know for California, teachers take the CSET exam.
Teaching Credential Programs
Online teaching programs are awesome! At this point, you can probably choose a teaching certificate program that can range from nine months to twelve months if you have at least a bachelor’s degree.
If you already have a bachelor’s degree, this is perfect because you most likely have some sort of interest in your bachelor’s degree and can use it to get a credential on top of that.
The only difference between someone with a teaching credential that has a bachelor’s and a master’s degree is the pay scale for teaching. But if you want to get started teaching, why not get the certificate? Then, once you get the certificate, you can go back for a master of your interest while you are teaching so that you can get paid while in school!
Master’s programs are different than bachelor’s programs in the sense that they accommodate working adults and busy schedules. I only had to attend one day a week and one Saturday a month in person!
