Welcome to our nursery for Kyla Mae! If you have read any of my other posts you know that I am obsessed with Amazon and love when packages arrive at my door, haha. Buying for your little one is easy, but deciding what items you NEED can be reallllly hard. When we walked into Buy Buy Baby I literally put my hands on everyyythinggg. I asked myself, “how do you know if you these are all the things that you REALLLLLY NEED?!”
When I was preparing for Kyla, I was given maybe a 250 square foot space to work with. I knew that we would have a minimal nursery, and I had to carefully choose the items that would serve as multiple purposes. Although the space is small, that was okay because having too much stuff would overwhelm me anyway. We are now having baby boy number two, so I have added items that work great as gender neutral items which will save you more money in the long run.
Now that we have a baby boy on the way, we are able to use all of these same items. A few of the decor is swapped to prepare for baby boy, so that we can now give Kyla a big girl room. In this post, I have gathered all the nursery items to make it simple for you. Here are the nursery essentials and Amazon nursery decor that will work for your baby girl or boy!

Nursery Furniture
Pack n Play
Some people might debate between a pack n play and a crib. Before you purchase, ask yourself will the baby sleep in the crib right away? Some of the time cribs are used for decoration, but that is not always the case. In the beginning, the baby might either sleep in a bassinet or with their mama. We chose a pack n play because it is mobile, can grow with your little one, and serves as multiple purposes.
This pack n play is my favorite because it is a gender-neutral color that can be used for either a baby boy or baby girl. Having costly things that are gender-neutral is a great way to save money for future babies to come. This pack n play serves multiple purposes because it comes with storage on the side. You can store diapers, wipes, Desitin, medicine, manuals, but you can choose whatever works for you!
Along with the purchase of the pack n play are a portable infant bouncer and changing station. Kyla has always been a busy baby, and the bouncer has been a GAME CHANGER for us! I could not imagine what we would have done without it. The bouncer was used for all of her naps, and it allowed me to do allll the mommy things I needed to without holding her. For example, shower, laundry, dishes, etc. We even took it on vacation when she was very little.
Now let’s talk about the changing table, it is attached to one side of the pack n play so that you will not have to waste space for a separate changing table. Do you see why I had to carefully choose items that serve multiple purposes? Other reasons to love the pack n play is because the sides are made of mesh for the breathing + baby’s safety. It also has an attached piece that has a light and plays soothing sounds! This is honestly one of the smartest purchases you can make!
Dresser
Let me just say that the more expensive purchases made for our first baby needed to work for all of our babies (boy and girl) because we did not want to waste money! There were many debates about which dresser to buy from Amazon because I wanted to have a minimal nursery for our baby girl. This dresser from Amazon is awesome because it has a lot of space and comes with 8 drawers. The top of the dresser is perfect for pictures and decorations! Below is a list of how I categorized each drawer to prepare for Kyla’s arrival.
Left side drawer 1: beanies and burp clothes
Left side drawer 2: receiving blankets
Left side drawer 3: baby wraps
Left side drawer 4: wash cloths and bibs
Right side drawer 1: sentimental items, baby shower cards, comb, qtips, + diapers
Right side drawer 2: Newborn + 0-3 month clothes
Right side drawer 3: 3-6 month clothes
Right side drawer 4: 6-12 month clothes
Whether we have a boy or girl next, I will always use this dresser for the nursery!
Rocking Chair
Many rocking chairs are suitable, but they can become expensive realllllyyyy quickly, we were lucky to purchase an expensive one for a very cheap price. Since it is a big purchase, you will want a gender-neutral color for all babies + gray is the perfect color!! This rocking chair is almost 5 stars with over 4,000 reviews. It is PERFECT if you are a breastfeeding mama because it is wide enough to fit a pillow and rest your arms. Having a glider also makes it easy for the baby to fall asleep. I still nurse Kyla while rocking her to sleep and she is out in less than 10 minutes!
Nursery Organization + Storage
Nursery Wall Hanging
The key to a nursery with a small space is to utilize the space with shelves + additional storage spaces! Four pieces that a great to have are floating shelves, a closet organizer, bookshelves + a hanging towel rack!! Do you see how much space we have all of a sudden? The floating shelves are GREAT for pictures, candles, and cute decor! They are something I realized we needed once her room was decorated and the top of her dresser became a little cluttered.
This closet organizer comes in 12 color options and is a PERFECT space to organize books, shoes, receiving blankets, burp cloths, toys, and bows! Kyla’s is pink to make the room pop + look a little more girly, but gray is a perfect gender neutral! Floating bookshelves add a cute little addition that will organize books for baby (this is an item that I need to purchase soon, so it’s a TIP for you). I included the hanging towel rack that I love because it is attached to a shelf for more decor and is perfect to quickly grab the towels for bath time! Kyla has a towel rack, but she does not half the shelf.
Storage Bins for Nursery
There are three separate baskets that you will want for the nursery. This is another way to add some decor, but you will want one basket for additional nursing items, + another basket for toys, etc.
The baby’s hamper is another basket you will want to store all of the babies dirty or clothes of course! Having a beige and white basket adds a different look to the room + is a nice gender-neutral color that we will ALWAYS use for the nursery! NOTE: I use a separate dirty basket for her clothes and put only her clean clothes in this basket that need to be put away!
The diaper genie was honestly one I debated about for a while. Then, a good friend of mine made a comment that stuck with me. She asked, how often will you take out the trash with a little one? Do you want your house to stink? You will go through so many diapers a day! Well, I got it, and it was such a great purchase!! It comes with diaper genie refill bags. *TIP: you can only purchase diaper genie refill bags for the diaper genie! Look for the logo before you purchase it. NOTE: I always buy a pack of three because I do not want to keep buying every few weeks for a refill bag. The purchase of three is made every two months or more. You already have so much to think about, this makes it easier for you!
Nursery Decor
Baby Name Sign
The baby name sign is one of the MOST sentimental gifts to personalize the nursery for your sweet baby. There are a few options when purchasing the sign. It comes in black, white, or unpainted in either a circle or hexagon shape! The one in Kyla’s nursery is black, circle, + 20 inches. Although the size might seem small, it is the perfect size for a great price!! Let me mention that I think it would be so cute to have two signs above two twin beds in the room for two little boys or girls. So cute right? I included another option from Etsy that I would purchase for a little boy’s room with a wooden background. Either option is great for a boy or girl, it is just about preference! But, we bought this brown wooden sign for our baby boy where you can choose different fonts and colors in size 18.
Rug
Since the more expensive items are gender-neutral for future babies we wanted a pink rug to personalize for a girl’s nursery. The rug in Kyla’s room brings life to her little nursery. It is soft, fluffy, and easy to wash! I also included a favorite rug for a future little boy to personalize it for a boy’s nursery.
Nursery Essentials
Baby Monitor
Having a baby monitor for the nursery is highly recommended and a way to keep an eye on the baby!! IT IS A MUST HAVE. There are soooo many baby monitors to purchase, but after all the research there were many reasons to choose the Motorola baby monitor. This camera connects to your phone through the Hubble app so that you can watch the baby from anywhere on your phone. Also, it has a portable screen and speaker on the monitor that allows you to talk to the baby. The camera zooms and moves in all directions so that you can get a clear view of the room + a clear view of the baby in day and night vision.
As for the closet, we store the additional diapers, onesies, shirts, travel bags, and extra toys. One of the ways I organized Kyla’s closet is by age. These closet dividers are a great way to divide the age groups premie, newborn, 0-3 months, 3-6 months, 6-9 months, and 9-12 months because the baby grows so quickly! The closet dividers help you to keep track of ALLLLL the baby’s clothes so that baby can wear each item at least once before they grow out of it. Every time Kyla has a growth spurt, I go through all of her clothes in the closet and dresser so that I can make room for her current clothes and clothes that she will fit into soon.
Decorating for your nursery is so exciting! Once the nursery is ready, you become more and more anxious to meet the baby.
