25 Baby Essentials: First 3 Months | Most Essential Things a Newborn Needs

baby essentials first 3 months

This post will help you pick baby essentials for the first 3 months.

If you are wanting to know baby essentials for the first three months you will actually need, this is for you. Planning for a second baby has helped me to really figure out what baby essentials we will need for the first 3 months while we wait for our home.

Our home has taken almost a full year to be built, so we do not have any extra space for fun baby items that we may not use. Most of our stuff is in storage, so I want to share with you all the best baby essentials for the first 3 months.

Now that this is our second time around creating a list, I know what you will actually use and what is worth spending on your baby in the first 3 months.

There are so many new baby brands that share great things, and it is so tempting to buy! But, there are only a few baby essentials for the first three months that you will not want to live without. If you want to avoid taking up space in your home, here is a checklist of baby essentials for the first 3 months.

This post may contain affiliate links, which means I’ll receive a commission if you decide to purchase through my links at no cost to you. Please read my full disclosure page here or on my website.

Baby Essentials- First 3 Months You Need:

Carseat + Stroller

A safe car seat is definitely needed when you first leave the hospital. You want to make sure you have something safe for the baby to come home. Once you are home and figure out life as a mama, you will want to try to get back to running errands with a newborn. This is when you will need a stroller! Having a car seat attached to a stroller really makes life simple because you can take the car seat out of your car and hook it up to its attachment to the stroller. However, this stroller simplifies life even more because it is a stroller that folds from a stroller to a car seat. So convenient!!

4 in 1 Carseat Canopy

A car seat canopy is good to have when you need to nurse and cover the baby when you are out in public. Having a 4 in 1 car seat canopy is so helpful in the first few months your baby is born so that you can use it multiple ways! This neutral color canopy is my favorite to use for both baby boy and baby girl. You can use it for all your littles as a carseat, nursing cover, etc.

Baby Clothes

Baby clothes are something that differs between gender and time of year. Our first was a baby girl born in December, so we kept a lot of onesies, socks, and beanies for her first three months. Our second is a baby boy due in March. Now that we have moved to Arizona, it will warm up a month later. In the first month, he will have about ten warm newborn outfits. But because babies grow out of newborn outfits so fast, he will transition to half of his clothes for warm weather and the other half for cool weather.

Swaddles

The best way to keep babies tightly wrapped, which is how they grew in your womb for nine months, is by swaddling them tight. Swaddling in a blanket mimics that feeling and is best to wrap them up cozy and tight. Three is a good number if you want to stay minimal.

Gloves

Newborns have the longest nails and somehow get their tiny little fingers to scratch their faces. Kyla always scratched herself, so I have made sure to keep four pairs of gloves for our second baby boy.

Socks

Unless it is scorching hot where you live, socks always keep your new little one warm when it’s cold outside or in your home.

Burp Rags

Having burlap rags on hand is such a big help. Most babies spit up quite a bit in their first year, or people hold the baby, so you can use the burp rags to clean up their mess and to leave something between your little one and someone who holds your baby that has been exposed to others throughout their day. A handful of 5-8 is a good amount if you do not have room to store too much.

Bath Tub

This tub is my ultimate favorite. I first thought it might be uncomfortable for littles, but it actually holds your baby up perfect for a bath, making for a quick + easy wash-up. It is effortless to clean instead of adding one extra task to your plate too!

Lotion + Bodywash

When taking a bath, babies need a body wash that doesn’t burn their eyes. If your baby has really dry skin, you will want to use lotion and body wash for dry eczema-prone skin!

Dreft Detergent

The best smelling detergent that protects your baby’s sensitive skin in their first year, especially in the first three months, is Dreft detergent. Your little one has not yet adapted to the pollution in the air because they are so new. Dreft smells SO GOOD, and we still use it for Kyla at age two because her skin is still sensitive + she has eczema. It helps relieve breakouts without having chemicals in her clothes and on her skin.

Stain Remover

Some of the cutest clothes I have from Kyla’s first year were ruined and trashed because of stains. This stain remover will help keep your baby’s clothes lasting for your newborn and future little ones.

Diaper Bag

Once you get out of the house, you will want a diaper bag that will last for all babies you plan on having. A diaper bag is something that I prefer to have gender-neutral to save money. You will take it everywhere with you when you are out in public searching for diapers, wipes, pacifiers, and formula in the store!

Bottles + Pacifiers

Having at least three to five bottles and pacifiers will be enough to get through a long day + not leave dishes too overwhelming when it is time to clean your baby’s bottles. Kyla was strictly breastfed but we plan on getting baby boy to use bottles so that I can give equal attention to both kids. With baby number two, we will always make sure we have a total of four so that they last a day and wash at night for the next day.

Diapers + Wipes

In the first few months of your baby’s life, you will go through more diapers than you have imagined! Between blowouts and all, I’d say definitely 8-10 diapers was used in the first few months.

Aquaphor

This was an undercover baby essential I did not know was so important for babies the first month! If you change your baby’s diaper and they have a rash, use Aquaphor!! Aquaphor is used like Desitin but better, in my opinion! It is not sticky and does not leave white on your fingers even after washing your hands.

Baby Wrap

Let me tell you that if you have one baby or four babies, you will NEED + WANT a baby wrap! Solly baby wraps are a personal favorite because they are so soft, easy to use, and you can do anything with a needy baby or when you are of mom of two or more!

Digital Thermometer

Digital thermometers are essential to track when your baby has fevers. A high temp can cause seizures and be very dangerous for your little one. Since Kyla was born in December, we kept our digital thermometer by our bed for late-night fevers we needed to check. RSV season is a scary time of year, and it is always best to be safe.

Towel

If you have little space, you will want at least two soft baby towels to switch out while your baby is getting out of the bath makes. These hooded towels are a favorite for the first three months and especially the first year. Kyla is two, and we still use the same hooded towels for her and her baby brother.

Bassinet

If you don’t plan on co-sleeping or have one in your bed already, trying a bassinet with your baby might be a good idea. Our first still sleeps with us, so we hope to try a bassinet the second time around if all works out well. That way, you have space in your bed and your new little one right next to you to check on them at night.

Noisemaker

When we have a newborn, sometimes we think sleeping in silence is best. BUT, if you plan on having more or this is not your first, keeping a noisemaker on is good for two reasons. Your baby will get used to noise with siblings, and it drowns out other loud noises that are going on in your home. We used this with our first, and it has changed how she sleeps!

Trunk Organizer

You cannot go wrong with a trunk organizer. It is totally different than a diaper bag! You can keep it inside your car to change diapers and grab essentials when you need them. We have one for our second baby, and it is a total game changer!

I hope you found the list of baby essentials that will save you time in planning ahead for your baby to come!
